Introduction

“Chintha” means thought in Malayalam. This word points to the twin focus of this webspace – that of the world of thought and that of the Malayalam language and culture. Here we intend to provide a window in the cyberspace to look deeper into these aspects.

Malayalam language originated in the current tiny state of Kerala of India and has evolved into its present form over the last 1000 years or so. The Malayalee psyche, living habits and cultural practices, language and literature have all been moulded by the physical landscape and climate of Kerala as well as that of the culture and language of her neighbourly regions and even those from the far off lands who came to Kerala through sea over the millennia. Richly endowed by nature as one of the most beautiful places on earth, with serpentine rivers and rivulets, sprightly waterfalls, sky-hugging mountains, silky green paddy fields, placid backwaters, pristine evergreen forests, fertile land, plentiful coconut trees and protected on one side by the sea and the other by the Western Ghat mountains, Kerala and Malayalam has produced a rich and vibrant cultural legacy. The openness of its people and erstwhile rulers have resulted in an amalgamation of several religious traditions – modern and ancient – into the potpourri of Malayalee culture today, much like the tasty “avial”, a culinary favorite of the Keralites.

The enterprising Malayalees or those who have Malayalam as their mother tongue are now geographically dispersed across the different corners globe, and the advent of the virtual space of internet has provided a unique opportunity for re-integration. This is a humble attempt at such an integration.
