നൈജീരിയയില്‍ വാക്സിനില്‍ നിന്ന് പോളിയോ

വേള്‍ഡ് ഹെല്‍ത്ത് ഓര്‍ഗനെസേഷനും സി.ഡി.സിയും കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച പുറത്തിറക്കിയ പ്രസ്താവനയിലാണ് നൈജീരിയയിലെ 69 കുട്ടികളിലുണ്ടായ പോളിയോ, പ്രതിരോധ വാക്സിനില്‍ നിന്നാണെന്ന് സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒന്നര വര്‍ഷമായി പുറത്തുവിടാതെ മൂടി വച്ചിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഈ വാര്‍ത്ത. പോളിയോ വാക്സിനേഷന്‍ പരിപാടിയെ പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കുമെന്ന ഭയമാണ് ഈ ഒളിച്ചു കളിക്ക് പിന്നിലെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. പോളിയോ വാക്സിന്‍ തന്നെ പോളിയോയ്ക്ക് കാരണമാകുന്നത് ഇതാദ്യമല്ല.

Nigeria has found 69 cases of children paralyzed by polio not caused by wild polio viruses, but rather weakened viruses from polio vaccine that have circulated and regained their power to cause disease, a team of international scientists reported Thursday.

"This vaccine is the most effective tool we have against the virus, but it's like fighting fire with fire," said Olen Kew, a virologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC and the World Health Organization announced the cause of the polio outbreak last week, even though they knew about it last year.
